I’ve been working as a freelance editor since 2010, on SF/F, romance, and academic nonfiction. I offer developmental editing, copy-editing, and proofreading to my clients. I also do indexing and bibliographic work for academic manuscripts.
I’m currently a contract editor for Dreamspinner Press, and the small fantastika press Candlemark & Gleam, amongst other independent clients. I’ve been a Submissions Editor for Uncanny Magazine, though I am not currently reading for them; but I am delighted to work on short fiction.
I’m happy to provide references if you’d like them.
Rates: I can provide any of these services at a flat rate of $30/hr.
- DEVELOPMENTAL EDITING. A developmental edit focuses on the story, the language used to tell it, the structure and organization of the work, and consistency of character and/or argument. I will suggest technical improvements to the language on a generalized, but not line-by-line, basis. 1.5 cents/word
- COPY EDITING. A copy edit focuses on fact-checking, continuity, and technical language issues (misplaced modifiers, stray participles, and other SPAG (spelling, punctuation, and grammar) work). 1 cent/word
- PROOFREADING. I will proofread your manuscript for formatting and punctuation errors, among other mechanical problems. I’d prefer to not proofread a manuscript I’ve already done developmental or copy edits for, as I’m likely to miss something on a manuscript I’ve already seen! 0.5 cents/word
- INDEXING & BIBLIOGRAPHIC WORK. I will prepare an index and bibliography for your manuscript. I am familiar with Chicago, Turabian, and MLA style. I am not the right indexing/bibliographic editor for manuscripts in the hard sciences, including psychology. $30/hr
Write to me at email@example.com for fiction manuscripts, and at firstname.lastname@example.org for academic manuscripts, and we can discuss your project!
